Chapter Twelve

Dana jumped at the pounding on her door.

“Come in,” she called, thinking she’d never get used to being locked in this room.

Brendan entered, gave her a half smile. “Good, you’re dressed. I’ll take you to see your brother now. And Tony…is very anxious to see you, too.”

Pushing waves of hair out of her eyes, Dana sprinted toward the door. “It’s about time. I’ll go mad if you insist on keeping me locked up, Brendan. If we’re going to fight your sister together, then I think it’s high time you start trusting me.”

“I agree,” he said as he led her out of the room. “This way.”

Dana immediately became suspicious. He was being way too tolerant. “You mean it?”

He glanced down at her as they walked through a long, carpeted passageway, its walls covered with priceless art. “We’re here together. Your brother is safe here. Your friends are willing to cooperate—”

“What do you mean, willing to cooperate? You make it sound as if they had to be persuaded.”

“They did, at first. But they came around to seeing things my way.”

“You threatened them, didn’t you?”

He gave her that simple smile again. “I made them an offer they couldn’t refuse.”

“We’re all here at your mercy, aren’t we?”

“You’re all here to help me, yes. But it’s a mutual thing. I will help you in return.”

“Okay, all right,” she said, letting out a long sigh. “Just let’s get on with it. I used to have a life. I’d like to get it back.”

“Me, too,” he said, the word a low growl.

Dana once again saw the darkness surrounding him. She wasn’t sure she wanted to know all the real reasons he was so obsessed with getting to his warped sister, but she knew she had her reasons for the same. “What’s the plan?” she asked as he took her down a set of winding stairs.

“Right now, we all get together and I explain things. After you visit with Stephen, of course. He’s doing great, by the way. I had my personal physician check him out. He’s back on his medication, so he should be fine.”

Dana swiped at the tears brimming in her eyes. “He’s okay, really?”

“Really. He’s been playing video games. I’ve got some prototypes here and I asked him to test them for me. They’re learning games, nonviolent, where the hero solves all the problems without guns or weapons. Mostly these games require a good brain. It helps teach kids to think on their feet.”

She relaxed a little. “Stephen would love that kind of game. And it helps him with his motor skills as well as improving his mind.”

“Exactly. He’s a very smart boy. He played several games, then we coaxed him to bed.”

Alarm coursed through Dana. “Who’s we?”

He guided her across a landing that offered a view of the lake. “Myself and Leo. Your brother has been with Leo the whole time, just as I told you.”

“Leo takes good care of him,” she said, her heart bursting with relief. “Where’s Tony?”

“Tony is ensconced in the computer room, helping me to hack into Caryn’s files.
